"I'm going over to visit Matt." I said to Maw as I headed out the door. "I hear he's just got himself a radio and we're going to listen to it." Not everyone in our county had electricity, and of those, not everyone had a radio yet. Matt had both of these, which was why I set out that Sunday night, October 30, 1938, to visit Matt. I'd heard a radio a time or two, but to actually sit and just listen to it for hours had charm both new and unique to me.

"Have a nice time, Son." Maw said to me. I waved goodbye in lieu of kissing her dear face, and cranked up the Ford. We'd get electricity ourselves on our farm, I vowed. Soon as the electric company ran their lines out from Princeton far enough to reach our lands, I'd pay the extra it took to run the line out to our house and we could have electric lights, and, when I'd saved enough money, a radio. Maybe next year. But they'd already reached Matt's house last summer, and he now had a radio.

The roads toward Rossmoor, New Jersey were pretty rough. They were paved closer to town, but out here, it was graded dirt and nothing but. Of course, we all had pickups this far out, so the roads weren't an obstacle, although they made the trip a bouncing, jarring experience.

I made it to Matt's house and saw that the lights were out in the house, but the barn's was on. Guess Matt had a sick cow or something. Darn it, I'd end up helping with a calving instead of listening to the radio.

But when I got there, I heard the radio going. Had Matt set his radio up in the barn instead of the house? That didn't make any sense.

"Matt? Matt?" I called out.

"Fred? Up here, and hurry!" came the hissing sound.

"Matt?"

"Sshhh! Get up here, now!" Matt was up in the hayloft.

I climbed the ladder up and saw the light I'd seen (not a bright one) was the light from the radio dial. It if hadn't been aimed in the right way, I wouldn't have seen anything.

Matt was hunkered down in one area of the hayloft he'd cleared. The radio was there, on a small table. Matt had set up the radio in the barn hayloft!

"Why you got the radio up here?" I asked.

"Only way to get reception from New York." he said. "And a good thing I did. Listen to this."

And I did, and this was what I heard on the radio that night:

"Ladies and gentlemen, I have just been handed a message that came in from Grovers Mill by telephone. Just one moment please.

At least forty people, including six state troopers lie dead in a field east of the village of Grovers Mill, their bodies burned and distorted beyond all possible recognition.

The next voice you hear will be that of Brigadier General Montgomery Smith, commander of the state militia at Trenton, New Jersey."
And then a second voice:
"I have been requested by the governor of New Jersey to place the counties of Mercer and Middlesex as far west as Princeton, and east to Jamesburg, under martial law. No one will be permitted to enter this area except by special pass issued by state or military authorities.

Four companies of state militia are proceeding from Trenton to Grovers Mill, and will aid in the evacuation of homes within the range of military operations.

Thank you."
And the announcer again.
"You have just been listening to General Montgomery Smith commanding the state militia at Trenton.

In the meantime, further details of the catastrophe at Grovers Mill are coming in. The strange creatures, after unleashing their deadly assault, crawled back in their pit and made no attempt to prevent the efforts of the firemen to recover the bodies and extinguish the fire. The combined fire departments of Mercer County are fighting the flames which menace the entire countryside.

We have been unable to establish any contact with our mobile unit at Grovers Mill, but we hope to be able to return you there at the earliest possible moment. In the meantime we take you to... just one moment please!"
A pause and I said hoarsely, "My God!"

"Yeah." Matt said. "I came up here to listen to the radio, and there was this meteor or something that landed over near Grover's Mill and those...those things came out."

"We're under martial law?" I said. We were in Middlesex County!

"And being invaded." Matt affirmed. "By creatures from the planet Mars."

I digested that and said the only thing I could. "Jesus!" I said. "What are we going to do?"

The voice on the radio was back with a new voice.
"Of the creatures in the rocket cylinder at Grovers Mill, I can give you no authoritative information either to their nature, their origin, or their purposes here on earth. Of their destructive instrument I might venture some conjectural explanation.

For want of a better term, I shall refer to the mysterious weapon as a heat ray. It's all too evident that these creatures have scientific knowledge far in advance of our own. It's my guess that in some way they are able to generate an intense heat in a chamber of practically absolute no conductivity. This intense heat they project in a parallel beam against any object they choose, by means of a polished parabolic mirror of unknown composition, much as the mirror of a lighthouse projects a beam of light. That is my conjecture of the origin of the heat ray..."
"What are we going to do?" Matt said and there was steel in his voice. "I'm staying right here and protecting my farm and my home." His barn was on a hill which was closer to Grover's Mill than his house. If he was going to make a stand, his barn was the place to be."

Matt looked at me. "I guess you ought to get on home so you can do the same thing."

I hesitated. "You got another rifle?"

"I sure do." Matt said.

"Then I'll stand here with you." I said. "They got to come through here to get to my place."

Matt's hand laid on my arm for a moment. "Thanks, Fred. You stay here and listen to the radio. I'll get the guns from the house and be back in a few minutes."

"Okay." I said.

When he got back, he asked, "How's it going?"

"Listen!" I said for the announcer was talking, and this was what he said:
"Ladies and gentlemen, I have a grave announcement to make.

"Incredible as it may seem, both the observations of science and the evidence of our eyes lead to the inescapable assumption that those strange beings who landed in the Jersey farmlands tonight are the vanguard of an invading army from the planet Mars.

"The battle which took place tonight at Grovers Mill has ended in one of the most startling defeats ever suffered by an army in modern times; seven thousand men armed with rifles and machine guns pitted against a single fighting machine of the invaders from Mars. One hundred and twenty known survivors. The rest strewn over the battle area from Grovers Mill to Plainsboro, crushed and trampled to death under the metal feet of the monster, or burned to cinders by its heat ray.

"The monster is now in control of the middle section of New Jersey and has effectively cut the state through its center. Communication lines are down from Pennsylvania to the Atlantic Ocean."
"Matt." I said. "The Martians are heading this way. They've moved fast, so fast! In just a few minutes, those heat rays they shoot took out the entire fucking Army!" I said. "What can we do?"

"Fred, Fred calm down." Matt said. "If they were coming this way, we'd hear them, wouldn't we?"

"Yeah. Right." I said. "So we wait. And listen to the radio?" I said.

"No. No!" Matt said. "Turn it off! Turn the damned thing off! It's no good to us any more."

He made a convulsive motion and killed the radio and the light which had been our only illumination. We were now in the darkness of the barn with only starlight to help us out, and not much of that.

I heard some wet sounds and realized that Matt wanted the darkness more than the silence. He was sobbing. Having calmed me down, now HE was losing it! My turn to be comforter.

"Hey!" I said, putting my hand on his shoulder. "Hey, Matt!"

"I just feel so damned helpless!" he snuffled. "We can't stop these things. All we can do is run."

"You want to run tonight?" I asked him. "Those Martians can't be close to us. They went from Grover's Mill toward Plainsboro. That puts them four-five miles to the northwest of us. We could head out, get my mother on the way, and go south. That'd take us away from all the people who are going to be running from the Martians."

"If that's the only Martian craft out there." Matt said. "There could be more. All those things launching at us from Mars, remember? There could be hundreds of them."

And he shivered, and I did the only thing I could under those circumstances. I knelt down further and I put my arms around him. Matt clung to my arm across his chest, holding me in place. We were going to die. I didn't try to get free.

"Oh, God, Fred!" Matt sighed. "What are we going to do?"

What could we do? I did the only thing that came to mind just then. I reached down and I kissed Matt's cheek.

He tensed for a second, then he relaxed into it. Turned his face to mine and our lips met. It was like the time, the situation, the moment, had broken something between us. Or maybe we just both needing a lot of reassurance right then.

Matt's head was resting on my shoulder, and I was kissing him, he was shivering, his eyes glittered with tears both wept and unwept sparkling like stars come down to Earth. I reached down his body to his crotch, felt the fire and the life that burned there. Matt hissed an intake of breath, and then exhaled slowly, so slowly, and he relaxed, and I could lay him back on the floor.

I can't explain why we did what we did, except that we were both expecting to die any minute, burning in the rays of an alien death machine. Maybe we'd get a chance to squeeze out a rifle shot or two, but if the Army couldn't stop the machine with all they had, our two little rifles couldn't mean much. We were just waiting until the sounds of approaching Martian craft drove us to flight. Meanwhile, like any frightened animal, we were hunkered down where we were, hoping to escaped unnoticed, unscathed.

Shivering like animals, we also had the animal rut. Mate when and where you can, let the body survive that way if nothing else!

All I know is I wasn't thinking, not about anything. Not about the farm, or my Mother, or even the Martians, really. My forebrain had turned off, my primeval backbrain was all that was left.

And with it firmly in control, I knelt over Matt and we kissed again, this time more fervently and face-to-face. My hand found Matt's crotch again and this time I fumbled and fished at the fly until I had it undone, could reach inside, and my fingers touched the raging shaft of flame inside, so hot in my hand, so powerful, so full and so rich!

Matt's chest was heaving as I kissed my way down the open shirt front, tasting the sweat of the day's labor, the strength that had borne him through the day, now it was quiescent, but vibrant under my lips, I fed upon it and it fed my lust.

Rising up onto my knees, I hastily pulled my shirt off and Matt sat up to do the same. From there, we fought free of the rest of our clothing, and naked and bare, human in the face of impending doom with nothing left to lose, we met and our bodies were warm against each other, and we affirmed our humanity and our life in the face of aliens and death.

And I worked my way down Matt's body, now free and available to my tongue, I licked the supple nipples of his breast, I savored the flavor of his ample pecs, I tasted the texture of his taut abs, I ran my tonguetip through the light layer of pubic hair that threaded down from his navel, and into the deeper thatch that lurked at the base of his masculinity, and from there, oh, God, from there, it was an airlift up the heights to seek the summit, and from there, over and down and around, a magnificent shaft of sweet skin rippled as my lips ran down them, and my tongue tasted the tumescence of his turgid tool. Down and around and upon him, and I was linked with Matt, linked by life in the midst of death, I would not be denied him now, not for anything.

My lips drooling my saliva upon him, I rose slowly back up and the nectar of his penis poured out in tribute. Matt groaned as I reached the glans again, and I stopped to slurp off the layer of slimy slick saltiness that lurked there, and with it now inside me, revitalizing me, I was ready to dive down once more.

Matt squirmed as I sucked on him, I thought at first it was only his writhing in desire, but as his body moved in position, I realized that he was seeking my own manhood, and I lifted my leg and rested it on the opposite side of his head as he slid into place, and then my cock found the niche of his mouth and like a peg fitting a hole, it went in slow, clean and smooth.

"Ooh, ahh, gahhh!" I gasped as the flames of desire poured from that one touch. I was boiling inside, the lust of the animal is a rapid one, mating is a matter of a few seconds, a few rapid thrusts and it is done, not for the goat is the long languid loving of mankind. It surged within me, and my humanity arose at this effrontery, and I fought down my bestial desire and replaced it with the more human romance, and that gentle warmth slowed my soul and guided my body.

I was able now to move in ways to make Matt's pleasure more intense, I could vary the movement of my lips and tongue upon his prick, make my mouth dance upon his pud, stir it into raging ecstasy.

And Matt moaned and I knew he was still in the more primordial clutches, and I lifted my mouth long enough to beg and plead with him. "Matt, no, not so fast, let it last, let it be enough for the rest of our lives, enough for eternity."

"I don't know how long I can last." Matt sighed. "God, let me finish this and I can face all the Martians without fear."

"I know." I agreed. "But let us love each other as men, not as beasts. We are men, let us love as men."

"I'll try." Matt said, and I took that as all the promise I could need.

We lay upon that floor and sucked some uncounted time, neither short nor long, and when I felt my climax rising within me, I let it come this time without hindrance, for it was the joy that arose from the human within me, and I could relish this without any concerns for my sanity.

"God, Matt, I'm going to come." I gasped out. "Soon, real soon."

Matt grunted an understanding and I resumed my attentions to his dong, and it burned and seethed within me and I knew that he had kept his promise, he had waited for me in some manner, either under control or under torture, but he had waited for me, and I let my orgasm rise and it reached my spirit and it ignited and I moaned, and as I did, Matt gave a sudden lurch and a gasp, and he was, with no further warning, bursting into my mouth.

Hot, salty, delicious jism poured into me, and I drank it down fervidly, the ultimate seed and essence of mankind was within it, and I felt myself increased as I consumed it, and my own heights were honored and added to by it, and I groaned, ejaculated downwards into Matt's mouth and throat, as though I was planting salvation down into the very depths of Hell, and bringing back out of it the spirits of decency and kindness and good.

For all those benevolent feelings washed over me as I squirted my semen, and Matt drank me down as I did him, and he and I finished and, a pair of panting people, we rested our heads on each other's legs and side by side, we waited for our bodies to recover.

"Aw, man, that was great." Matt said. "I can face those Goddamned Martians now."

"Me, too." I said. "Uh, we should turn on the radio again, see what we can learn about where they are."

"If the radio will even work." Matt said.

He turned it on and it warmed up and then we heard it, Orson Welles telling everyone that he had simply played a Halloween prank on us. We listened to it all and I said to Matt when it was done, "What do you think about that?"

"Damn stupid joke to pull on people." was Matt's assessment.

"Yeah." I said. "Scare everyone into doing...all kinds of stuff."

"Yeah." Matt said. "So, now we know the Martians aren't invading after all...now what?"

What now, indeed? Do we feel ashamed. "No." I said in answer to my own thoughts. "I don't regret nothing we did. Do you?"

"No." Matt said.

And we smiled at each other in our triumph, lit only by the gentle glow of the radio dial.
